The resin and matting are laid wet across the whole roof and cure into one solid piece, trims included. There is no joint anywhere for water to work at.
Laid using Cure It materials to their specification, including the correct catalyst ratios for the temperature on the day. GRP is chemistry as much as roofing, and rushing it shows.
GRP needs a rigid, dry, correctly fixed deck. New OSB3 goes down on most jobs, with the board joints and fixings set out for the system rather than for speed.
Once cured, the surface takes foot traffic, ladders and furniture in a way a soft membrane will not, which is why balconies and roof terraces usually end up in GRP.
A pigmented topcoat goes on last, so the roof looks finished rather than raw, and the colour can be picked to sit with the rest of the building.
GRP is not the answer to every flat roof. Where a rubber roof is the better call for the deck, the movement or the budget, you will be told so.
For balconies, walkways and anywhere that gets walked on regularly, GRP is usually the better call because the finished surface is hard. For a plain garage roof that nobody stands on, EPDM is often the more sensible spend. Both are good systems used in the right place.
Most domestic roofs are two to three days including the deck, depending on size and weather. It has to go down dry and it needs a workable temperature, so it is one of the few jobs genuinely worth waiting for a decent spell for.
It can, within limits. The catalyst ratio changes with temperature and there is a point below which laying it is a false economy. We would rather move the date by a week than lay a roof that will not cure properly.
Properly laid on a rigid, correctly fixed deck, no. Cracking in GRP nearly always traces back to deck movement underneath it, which is why the boarding is treated as part of the roof rather than as something the roof sits on.
Yes, and it is one of the jobs GRP does best. Upstands, thresholds and drainage all get detailed properly, because a balcony over a habitable room is not a roof you want to be revisiting.
