Leadwork in Edenbridge, Surrey & Sussex

Valleys, soakers, flashings, aprons and box gutters, dressed by hand in the right code of lead. Lead outlasts every cheap alternative on the market, and on the older property around the Weald it is usually the only detail that will be accepted anyway.

What is included

Every leadwork, covered

Right code for the detail

Code 4, 5 and 6 all have their place. The code gets chosen for the exposure and the size of the piece, not for what is cheapest on the delivery note.

Dressed on the roof

Lead is worked to the shape of the roof in front of us rather than folded up on a bench and forced to fit. That is the difference between a flashing that sits down and one that lifts in the first gale.

Valleys that clear themselves

Open lead valleys set out with the right width and the right lap so leaves and rain both leave the roof instead of gathering in it.

No cement fillets

Mortar fillets crack, always. Where we find one we replace it with proper stepped and chased lead flashing, wedged and pointed as it should have been.

Bay roofs and canopies

Small lead roofs over bays, porches and canopies, laid with the right bay sizes and rolls so thermal movement has somewhere to go.

Patinated on completion

Finished lead gets patination oil so it weathers evenly instead of running white streaks down the brickwork through the first winter.

Questions

Asked and answered

Why does lead cost more than the alternatives?

Because the material costs more and it takes longer to work. It also lasts several times as long, which is why it is still specified on anything that matters. On a chimney you can reach from a scaffold, the difference over the life of the roof is not close.

My chimney has a cement fillet. Is that a problem?

Usually, yes. Cement fillets are a shortcut that crack as the building moves and then feed water straight into the chimney breast. They are one of the most common causes of the damp patches on upstairs walls that we get called out to.

Do you do lead on listed buildings?

Yes. Around Edenbridge, Westerham and Tunbridge Wells that comes up regularly, and it usually means matching what was there in both code and profile rather than fitting the modern equivalent. That is priced for what it is.

Can lead be repaired, or does it need replacing?

Splits from thermal fatigue can be lead-welded where the sheet is sound. If the split is there because the bay was too big in the first place, welding it just moves the problem, and it wants re-forming properly instead.

Do you replace lead stolen off a roof?

Yes, and it happens more than people expect on churches and larger period property. It gets replaced properly, and we will talk to you about what is worth doing to make the same thing harder next time.
