What is included

Every slate or tile roof, covered

Right covering for the pitch

Every tile and slate has a minimum pitch it will actually work at. Getting that wrong is why some roofs let water in from day one, so it is checked before anything is ordered.

Natural slate laid properly

Holed, sorted and laid with the right headlap, on treated battens with copper or aluminium nails. Slate on the wrong fixings is a roof with a countdown on it.

Clay plain tile and pantile

Traditional Kent and Sussex coverings, including hand-made where the property calls for it, bedded and clipped to modern fixing standards.

Ridges, hips and verges

Dry-fix or mortar bedded, both done properly. Dry ridge systems are mechanically fixed and stay put in a gale, which is more than can be said for a lot of the old bedded ridges we take off.

Velux and rooflights

Velux windows fitted and flashed into slate and tile with the correct flashing kit for the covering, not a bead of silicone and hope.

Trusted materials

Redland, Marley and Velux as standard, with reclaimed and specialist tiles sourced where the roof needs them.

Questions

Asked and answered

Is slate better than tile?

Neither is better, they are different. Natural slate is thin, light, long-lived and suits steeper pitches and period property. Concrete and clay tiles are heavier, cheaper per square metre and work down to lower pitches. The right answer usually comes from the house rather than from a preference.

Can you match slates or tiles on an old roof?

Usually. Between current ranges, matched profiles and reclaimed stock there is normally something that sits right. On a conservation-area property we will be honest about what will be accepted and what will not.

My ridge tiles are loose. Do I need the whole roof done?

Almost certainly not. Loose bedded ridges are one of the most common jobs we do and they get re-bedded or converted to a mechanically fixed dry ridge on their own, without touching the rest of the covering.

Do you fit dry verge and dry ridge systems?

Yes. On any re-roof we will usually recommend them. They are mechanically fixed, they do not crack out like mortar, and in the exposed spots around the Weald that matters more than it does in a sheltered street.

Can you fit a Velux window into an existing roof?

Yes. The opening is formed, the rafters trimmed where needed, and the window flashed in with the correct kit for slate or for tile. It is a day or two of work on most roofs, and the inside making-good can be arranged too.
